Facts And Myths About Acne
The Facts And Myths About Acne
by Erin Carmody
There is so much false information floating around in cyberspace regarding acne and acne treatment. To control your acne you need to be armed with the right information that can tell you facts and not fictions. Here are the most common myths associated with acne and acne treatment.
You don't wash your face enough
This is not only incorrect, but it is a myth that could actually cause more acne on your skin. If you wash your face more than two times a day by scrubbing the skin raw to help remove the acne the only thing you are doing is taking away natural oils while stimulating the production of more oil. This added oil will just clog up your pores more and cause you even more acne
breakouts.
You should always clean your face gently with water or a mild cleanser that is made specifically for acne. That should plenty enough to rid the excess oils as well as any dust and dirt that can clog your pores. Over-washing is always to be avoided, as you can potentially irritate your skin and only make your acne situation worse. Keep in mind that there are plenty of people with clear skin out there who are not constantly running off to a bathroom to obsessively wash.
You eat too much chocolate and fried foods
Studies have yet to prove that there is a correlation between chocolate, fried foods and acne although this is one myth that so many people believe. There are even some people that swear by this myth and if that person is you then by all means avoid the chocolate and fried foods, but for the rest of us, continue eating them - in moderation of course. What is true is that your diet can affect your acne but not in this way. The certain lack of vitamins and minerals that your body needs will indeed cause acne, but having a chocolate bar once in a while is not going to do you any harm.
You are breaking out from stress
This unfortunately is very true. While the stress itself doesn't cause the acne, it can promote acne breakouts if you are prone to acne already. That simply means that if you know you have acne and you find yourself worried and stressful about anything then chances are you are going to have a larger acne breakout then if you had no stresses in your life at that moment. The best way to curb stress and help your acne is through meditation, yoga, or finding a relaxing hobby that lessens your stress and calms your nerves.
Wearing make-up causes acne
This one is actually both a myth and a fact. Yes, wearing heavy makeup that is oil based can clog your pores and cause acne. However, there is plenty of makeup for a woman that is acne friendly. That just means that it may be "non-comedogenic" meaning it is oil free to help with your acne treatment. Many concealers and foundations on the shelves today are medicated with benzoyl peroxide that helps control your acne and treats it at the same time.
